Learn the step-by-step process for connecting two iOS devices in the Detail app to create professional multi-camera recordings.
Hey, it's Frank from Detail, and I'm going to walk you through exactly how to connect two iOS devices in the Detail app. This is something we get asked about quite a bit in the comments, so I wanted to create a straightforward, step-by-step guide that makes the whole process crystal clear.
The setup is actually pretty simple. You need two iOS devices, which can be any combination of iPads and iPhones. Two iPads, two iPhones, an iPad and an iPhone, whatever you've got. And of course, you need the Detail app.
For this tutorial, I'm using my iPhone 16 as one device. This is my daily driver, the phone I use every day. For the second device, I've got the iPad M3 (the iPad Air model). One really cool thing I want to mention is that I have my external Pro camera connected to my iPad with just one USB cable. That's what's giving you this really awesome image quality you're seeing.
But here's the thing: you don't need to do that at all. You can just use your iPhone 16, 15, or 14 Pro as your main camera. These are awesome cameras on their own. Then you can use the iPad as a screen, or vice versa. It's totally flexible.
Let me break down the actual connection process. I'm screen recording my iPad so you can see exactly what I'm doing.
First, open the Detail app on both devices. You'll see a similar screen on each one. On my iPhone, I just hit the plus icon. At this point, I've got my iPhone open and my iPad open with the Pro camera connected, but they're not connected to each other yet.
Here's where it gets super easy. Go to the menu at the top and click on the connect button. This puts the device into search mode. When I do the same thing on my iPad (go to connect), instantly they find each other and connect. That's basically it.
Now comes the fun part. I can press record on one of these devices, and it will start recording on both. If you see some delay between the devices, don't be alarmed. This is just your wireless network, and the files might be a little bit congested during recording. But when you sync the files afterward, Detail will sync them up properly, so any delay issues should be mitigated.
When you press record on your iPhone, it should also start recording on your iPad automatically. Do your talking, whatever demo you're doing, and then hit record again to stop.
The record button becomes the stop button once you're recording. When you hit it again, it stops recording on both devices.
After you disconnect, look at the top right of your screen. You'll see that everything is syncing automatically. The footage is downloading, uploading, and syncing between devices without you having to do anything. This automatic sync is what makes Detail so powerful for multi-camera recordings.
And that's essentially how you create a multi-cam recording in Detail. It's a straightforward process once you know the steps: open the app on both devices, connect them through the menu, hit record on one device, and let the app handle the rest.
Happy creating, and I'll catch you on the next one.
