Learn how to create polished top-down video shots using just your iPad and iPhone with this simple setup tutorial.
I've been experimenting with top-down shots lately, and I've figured out a setup that lets you create really professional-looking content with just your iPad and iPhone. The best part? You can start creating cool stuff in seconds once you understand the basics.
The core problem with top-down shots is simple: when your phone is mounted above your workspace, there's no way to see what you're recording. You're essentially shooting blind. That's where using an iPad as a monitor comes in, and with the Detail app, you can wirelessly transmit whatever you're recording on your iPhone directly to your iPad screen. This gives you a large, clear view of exactly what you're capturing.
For my setup, I'm using my iPhone as the main camera (my daily driver works perfectly for this). The tripod I've chosen is an Insta360 model that extends up to 1.5 meters. What I love about this particular tripod is that it's both sturdy and compact enough to fit in my backpack, making it really mobile. It's also not super expensive, which is a bonus.
I've made a couple of modifications to optimize it for this purpose. First, I mounted a ball head on top, which lets me rotate my MagSafe mount into any position I need. Second, I added a MagSafe mount itself so I can simply slap my phone on and it holds securely. This combination works really well for quick setup and adjustments.
With Detail you can wirelessly transmit whatever you're recording on your phone to your iPad. So you have a really nice screen so you can see actually what you're doing.
The connection process is straightforward. This works with two iPhones, two iPads, or an iPhone and iPad combo, whatever you have available.
Here's how to connect them: Open the Detail app on your iPhone and start a new project. You'll see a plus person icon at the top right corner, tap that. Do the same thing on your iPad. Within seconds, the devices connect to each other automatically.
For the highest quality footage, make sure you're using the rear camera on your iPhone (there's a button to toggle this). Once that's selected, you'll see your iPhone's camera feed appear on your iPad screen.
With everything connected, mount your iPhone to the tripod using the MagSafe attachment. Extend the tripod to your desired height. I typically use the 1.5x zoom (the wide angle setting) to capture more of the workspace.
Once your tripod is positioned and your phone is mounted, you can adjust your framing using the iPad as your monitor. Detail has different scene options you can choose from, and I find this particular setup creates such a fun way to record. You can look at the screen while you work, talk about what you're doing, demonstrate your process, all while seeing exactly what your audience will see.
What makes Detail particularly powerful is that it records everything in ISO format. This means that even after your recording is done, you can still change layouts and make adjustments. You're not locked into your initial choices.
The workflow becomes beautifully simple: position your equipment, frame your shot using the iPad monitor, hit record, and create. The iPad gives you confidence that you're capturing exactly what you want, eliminating the guesswork that normally comes with overhead shots.
This setup has transformed how I approach top-down content. It's mobile, it's flexible, and most importantly, it gives you the visual feedback you need to create polished, professional-looking shots without expensive equipment or complicated setups. Give it a try and see what you can create.
