Detail app now lets you drag picture-in-picture anywhere on screen and adjust masking effects, even after recording is complete.
Frank from Detail recently walked through some exciting updates to the app's masking and picture-in-picture capabilities that give creators significantly more flexibility in their video layouts. The improvements are straightforward but game-changing: instead of being locked into the four corners of the screen, you can now position your picture-in-picture anywhere you want.
The old limitations were simple—your secondary camera feed could only sit in one of the four fixed corner positions. Now, that constraint is completely gone, opening up creative possibilities for reaction videos, live streams, tutorials, and any other format where you want more control over your visual composition.
Getting started is simple. Once you open Detail, you'll see the main screen where you tap on the layout option to access your picture-in-picture settings. From there, you can see both camera feeds—in Frank's case, his recording setup and selfie camera.
The drag functionality is intuitive. You can move your picture-in-picture feed anywhere on the screen, positioning it exactly where it makes sense for your content. Beyond just moving it around, you can also apply masking effects like circular masks that give your videos a more polished, professional look.
"I can drag myself around and let's say I want to go to the circle, I can mask myself... I think this looks kind of awesome."
This flexibility is particularly useful for reaction videos and live content where you might want your face positioned in a specific area to complement what's happening on the main screen.
Perhaps the most valuable aspect of these new features is that everything can be adjusted after you've finished recording. If you're unhappy with how you positioned your picture-in-picture during recording, you don't need to start over.
Simply stop recording, go back in time by tapping the timeline, click on layout, and make whatever changes you need. You can switch back to split screen, return to the original picture-in-picture position, or drag elements to entirely new locations. The full range of layout options remains available even after your recording is complete.
This post-production flexibility removes a lot of pressure from the recording process itself. You can focus on your performance and content delivery, knowing that the visual composition can be refined later. It's the kind of feature that might seem small but makes a real difference in workflow efficiency and creative freedom.
