Two iPhones and a free app called Detail let you watch yourself through your back camera in real time while you record.
Recording with your phone's back camera produces the best quality footage you have access to — and it comes with a maddening tradeoff. You can't see yourself. Every take is a guess: you aim the phone, hit record, and find out afterward that you were half out of frame the whole time. There's a simple fix that costs nothing and uses gear you probably already own.
All you need is two iPhones and a free app called Detail. One phone becomes your camera, the other becomes a live wireless monitor showing you exactly what the back camera sees, in real time.
Download Detail from the App Store on both phones. Open the app on each one, tap New Project, and make sure both devices are on the same Wi-Fi network. That shared network is how they find each other automatically — no Bluetooth pairing, no cables, no manual setup.
On both phones, tap the three dots in the corner and tap Connect. They'll sync instantly, and you'll see a split screen showing both camera feeds at the same time.
No cables, no expensive monitors, no extra gear. Just two iPhones and Detail.
On the phone you're using to actually record, flip to the back camera and mount it on a tripod aimed at wherever you'll be sitting or standing. That phone is your camera — you don't touch it again once it's positioned.
Pick up the second phone. In Detail, tap Layout and select Single Frame so you're only seeing one feed instead of the split screen. Then tap Swap Source. Now your monitor phone is showing you exactly what your back camera sees, live.

With the monitor in your hand, use it to check your framing before you start. Adjust the tripod until everything looks right. When you're ready, hit record directly from the monitor phone, then sit down and hold it in your lap or off to the side.
From that point on, you can watch yourself in real time while the back camera records. If you drift out of frame, you'll see it immediately. You can check your lighting, adjust your position, and correct any issues without stopping the take to review footage.
No more guessing. You can see exactly what you look like while you're recording.
