OpenAI's first piece of hardware just arrived, and it's not the AI device everyone is waiting for. That one, built in collaboration with Jony Ive, is called IO. This is something smaller and more immediate: a physical controller built with Worker Louder, designed to give you a tactile interface for interacting with Codex and the AI agents you build inside it.
The box itself is understated. An OpenAI logo on the inside is about as theatrical as the unboxing gets. What comes out is a compact, milled-metal keypad with rubber feet that grip the desk, a satisfying knob, a joystick, and a handful of configurable keys along the top.
When I looked at the images of it, it felt sort of like a flimsy thing. And I was a little afraid that it'd be like a toy.
That fear did not survive first contact. The weight is the thing. It sits on the desk like it belongs there, not like something that will skitter around every time you reach for it. The milled metallic surface looks sharp, and the rubber side panels keep it planted. I ordered the clicky version, which means the keys make that deeply satisfying mechanical sound that keyboard enthusiasts will recognize immediately.
The layout reflects how I already use Codex. There is a large microphone key front and center, which tracks with the reality that most of my interaction with the tool is voice input these days, not typing. Accept and reject keys are built in, and the row of configurable keys at the top can be mapped to whatever actions you want.
The mic key is upfront, because that's how I use Codex. I hardly type anymore, it's all speech input.
The icon set included in the box covers the standard controls you would expect, but it also ships with YOLO and YEEEET, which tells you something about the spirit of the thing. Those are not accidents; they are baked-in acknowledgments that the people using Codex and building on top of it have a particular sensibility.
The honest answer is I do not know yet. First impressions are strong: the hardware feels considered, the weight earns trust, and the clicky feedback makes long sessions feel more intentional. Whether it actually earns a permanent spot on the desk depends on how deeply it integrates into the daily rhythm of working with AI agents.
I'm going to introduce it into my workflow and then we'll see if it actually becomes a permanent fixture on my desk or not.
What is clear already is that this is not a toy dressed up as a tool. The weight, the milled finish, the rubber grip, the thoughtful key layout: all of it suggests something built to be used, not just displayed. Whether the software side of the Codex integration lives up to the hardware is the next question worth answering.
