A weekend haircut goes sideways when a barber refuses to experiment and gives you something "that suits your face" instead.
Your hair always looks its best on the exact day you've booked a haircut. This is one of life's more reliable cruelties.
I headed out on a weekend to get mine sorted. On the way, I stopped at my favorite coffee spot in the neighborhood and grabbed a flat white. A good start. Then I sat down in the barber's chair and, feeling bold, told him I wanted something crazy and experimental.
He looked at me and asked, point blank, "Are you okay? Is everything okay in your life?"
Are you okay? Is everything okay in your life?
He wasn't going to do it. Instead, he gave me a haircut he felt suited my face, without going too crazy. And because I am, as established, not great at confrontation with my barber, I accepted whatever he came up with.
You are not really good at confrontation with your barber. So in the end you accept the hair that he gives you.
The result? Sort of a mullet, but not really a mullet. I think it looks okay.
Fresh out of the barbershop, hair always looks fine. That's not the real test. The real test is what it looks like after the first shower. So I went home, took one, and well — you can judge for yourselves.
