Jana McKinney built a breathwork certification program after escaping a toxic marriage and discovering the science of why breathing changes everything.
Seven years ago, I was in a toxic marriage and things were getting scary. I wasn't looking for a wellness practice. I was looking for a way to survive the day. What I found was breathwork, and it changed the entire direction of my life.
It started with pranayama: sitting, paying attention to my breath, deepening it, slowing it. I'd finish a session feeling like I'd had a good cry, feeling like I could handle whatever was coming. And because I have a degree in physiology, I couldn't just accept that and move on. I had to understand why. Why does the breath make you feel so different? Why does it work so fast?
That question pulled me into a deep study of breathwork science, and what I found surprised me. There wasn't just one technique. There were dozens of different types, each working on the body and nervous system in distinct ways. The problem was that accessing them required years of study and a small fortune to certify in each one. I made it my mission to learn them all anyway, and I did.
Most breathwork programs teach one technique and send you out the door. That never made sense to me. Your nervous system is not the same as your neighbor's. Your breathing mechanics, your history, your goals, all of it is different. The technique that works brilliantly for one person can be completely wrong for another.
When I started teaching breathwork to my health and life coaching clients, I was already pulling from the full range of what I'd learned. And the results were undeniable. Metabolisms that had been stuck started moving. Clients who had been locked in chronic fight-or-flight, carrying trauma in their bodies, began to actually heal. People who came to me for physical health goals were getting better results once we addressed the nervous system underneath everything else.
"When I found breathwork, it was like game over. Everybody's results were just way better because their metabolism finally started working right."
When people started asking me to teach them what I was doing, I pointed them toward the same path I'd taken: anatomy and physiology courses at university, psychology classes, multiple certifications. Their jaws dropped. The cost alone would run over $100,000, plus years of study. So I built a certification program myself, one that teaches all the different types and trains facilitators to customize the technique for the exact nervous system and health of the person in front of them.
Most people are walking around in a state of chronic fight-or-flight and don't realize how much it's costing them. It's not just anxiety or feeling wound up. Chronic stress pulls the body's resources away from repair, away from digestion, away from immune function. The parasympathetic nervous system, what we call rest and digest, is where your body does its actual healing work: regrowth, replenishment, homeostasis. When you never get there, everything suffers.
Breathwork is one of the most direct tools we have for shifting that state. It's not a slow process. A single session can move you from dysregulated to calm in minutes. And when you use it consistently, the changes compound.
The breath shifts your state in minutes when the day feels unmanageable.
I've watched clients eradicate suicidal thinking and fall back in love with their lives. I've had clients with Hashimoto's heal their nervous systems through breathwork and see their condition resolve. These aren't outlier stories. This is what becomes possible when you give the body the conditions it needs to repair itself.
My four kids were little when things got ugly. They were struggling, absorbing the chaos of what was happening around them. Watching them over these seven years has taught me something I now talk about with every client: when you do your own healing, it doesn't stay contained to you.
Our nervous systems are built with mirror neurons. When you walk into a room more regulated, more healed, the people around you begin to mirror that state. They don't have to know anything about breathwork. They just feel the shift. My kids started asking me what breaths to do when anxiety hit. They do the breaths. The anxiety goes away. They don't even fully admit they're using it, which honestly makes me love it more.
"I truly believe when you do your own healing, you go out into the world a kinder, more compassionate human. And that ripples into everyone that you meet."
That ripple is why I'm not just teaching private clients anymore. I've certified breathwork facilitators around the world because I know I can only reach so many people alone. Every facilitator I train multiplies that reach. Every regulated nervous system in a community shifts the people around it.
My background is physiology, but I've learned that the body and mind don't separate as cleanly as the textbooks suggest. This platform will cover the science, the practical techniques, and the real stories from people who have used breath to come back from places that felt unreachable. I'll share breathwork journeys you can use directly for your own healing, break down different techniques and when to use them, and interview clients who've lived the results firsthand.
I grew up in Utah watching my family struggle with diabetes and watching my dad refuse to accept that as inevitable. He took us hiking instead. He showed us by example. That's the same lesson I'm trying to pass on now, to my clients, to my kids, to anyone who finds their way here.
If you've searched up breathwork, there's something you're looking for. I want to know what it is. Tell me what you're dealing with, what you need, and I'll bring you the episodes that actually help. That's the whole point of this.
